Thanks for sharing Jeremy. One minute seems like nothing but it it can be very challenging and powerful! I like how you encourage us to pause to notice what is inside and without that, our mind swirls us around with many things in our head and hinder us from being present with the people in front of us!

Thanks Ron! One minutes seems ridiculously small. Sometimes I can’t hold it that long. Other times it turns into a longer pause.

Either way, to your point, it helps us be present with the people in front of us.

I think of the keys is to try practice 1 min of pause during calm moment so that it is easier to pause during challenging time. That pause can be very powerful to break negative cycle.

100% I say that to the adults I work with and the kids I coach.

Learn the skill in the least risky environment first.

Increase risk/pressure as the skill becomes more developed.

Access that skill then becomes easier, even when our nervous system wants to fight or flight our way out of using it.

"I think the new trap is that meaningful content can become its own form of distraction."

BANGER of a line. Really resonated with me. I've prioritized stillness and silence over my phone, and it's a practice I do all the time...to reinforce it. In an elevator? No phone. Just stare forward. In a line at the grocery store? No phone. Just stare forward, or look around and smile at a moment you see. It sounds silly, but for me it's been valuable.

I appreciate it. It’s such a trap. The meaningful content some how gives me permission to doomscroll when my brain really needs a break from it all. I am working on another piece right now that digs deep into finding more time to have a longer break from phone.

I love how you frame this, because it's so true. If it's slop then we can justify putting our phone down, but if it's meaningful, all of a sudden it's bad if we do put the phone down! Like you said, such a trap!

At a certain point, we need to prioritize our peace of mind, even if pitted against what we perceive to be the most meaningful content 🙂

Right?!?!

Inner peace and fatherly presence or “most meaningful content” of the moment?

Seems silly,

In the moment, if I don’t pause, I don’t answer that question well.

You hit the nail square on the head Jeremy. When something speaks to you, take a moment to let it sink in, then ask the question: “what will I do with this.”

Thanks for the article.

Thanks John! Pause, let it sink in, and ask the question “what will I do with this!” Is so important.
