Friday Fieldwork: The End-of-Day Reset
A rhythm for reconnecting when you’re worn out but still wanted.
Evenings can be a beautiful mess, you can read more about one of ours that inspired today’s post here.
You’ve wrapped up work, handled kids activities logistics, folded part of the laundry, or maybe just survived another Tuesday.
You’re running on fumes but the day’s not done.
Because someone still wants you.
Wants your story voice.
Your steady presence.
Your warmth even when you feel empty.
And that want usually arrives in some form of:
“Daddy, are you coming?”
It’s not always cute or well-timed.
It can feel a little demanding, a little relentless.
But underneath the ask is something sacred:
An invitation to connect.
To be the safe one.
To close the day with presence not just survival.
And here’s the tension:
You want to show up.
You also want 10 minutes of silence and a dinner that’s still warm.
That’s normal.
But that’s also why I keep returning to this reset — not because I’ve mastered it, but because I still need it.
The 3-Part Reset (for when the bedtime invitation comes and you’re not ready)
1. Breathe Before You Enter
Right before you head upstairs or down the hall, pause.
Exhale fully.
Tell your nervous system: “You’re safe. You’re home. You’re done.”
2. Anchor in the Ordinary
Let the small routines do their work:
Brush your teeth together.
Slide into PJs.
Let the rhythm settle you both.
3. Touch Base, Then Tuck In
You don’t need magic words.
Just lean on the pattern:
A story. A silly argument about whose spot it is. A quiet “I love you.”
This reset won’t solve your exhaustion or probably fill your tank.
But it can create space for something better, because:
You can’t fix the whole day.
But you can shape the last five minutes.
And that’s what they’ll carry to sleep.
Let that be your end-of-day ritual.
Not perfect. Just real.
And sometimes the best reset is the one that starts with a whisper… and ends with your breath slowing beside theirs.
I instantly took a deep breath as I read step 1. I’ve been moving since morning and I just put my daughter to sleep. First time I pick up my phone to read a bit and saw your post. I needed that reminder- even though it’s not end of day yet.
Amen brother
