Friday Fieldwork: Practice a Micro-Blessing
For when the moment finds you alone with one of your kids
It’s easy to miss the moment.
You’re brushing teeth. Buckling a seatbelt. Walking to the mailbox.
And suddenly, you realize: it’s just the two of you.
No interruptions. No chaos. Just a sliver of quiet.
If you’re anything like me, you don’t always know what to say. Maybe the day was loud. Maybe your brain is fried. Maybe you’re still recovering from bedtime battles or baseball practice meltdowns.
But lately, I’ve been trying something simple in those micro-moments:
A micro-blessing.
Something small, specific, and spoken with heart.
Like:
"I’m so thankful God gave me a Drew. You’re kind, energetic, and silly."
It takes five seconds.
But it lands in a way nothing else does.
Not because it’s profound.
But because it’s true — and intentional — and it meets them in the stillness.
Try This 3-Part Reset:
1. Catch the Quiet.
Notice the moment when it’s just the two of you. No fanfare needed — brushing teeth works.
2. Speak the Blessing.
Say something real. Specific. Loving. Even if it’s simple:
"I love being your dad. I’m proud of you today."
3. Let It Land.
No need to explain or elaborate. Just say it — and let it echo.
You don’t need the perfect words.
You just need to say the true ones — out loud, and on purpose.
Try one of these openers:
“I’m so thankful God gave me a ___ like you.”
“You know what I admire about you?”
“I love how you…”
Fieldwork Prompt:
This weekend, look for one quiet moment with your kid.
Pause.
Breathe.
Say something that sticks.
Let that be your fieldwork.
Let that be your micro-blessing
